“IF YOU NEED A MIRACLE….BE….THE MIRACLE”
The other day, I was on the treadmill (no, not hanging up my clothes…..I was actually walking on it) while watching TV. A famous talk-show host— appeared up close ad personal in the camera and shouted, “IF YOU NEED A MIRACLE…BE…THE MIRACLE!” He even shook his finger into the camera for that serious emphasis sort of thing. Well, all righty then.
But first, excuse me, while I go vomit.
Platitudes have always bothered me. The create an immediate, involunatary gag response. They seem to come from people who act like they have it all together. They live in a place, I call, “UP THERE“. While I, however, remain steadfastly—”DOWN HERE“. I would just like to get my flashlight batteries in the right order, the first time.
They seem to be telling us we should be perpetually reaching for something grand and resume worthy. “EXPECT A MIRACLE!” It just seems like a whole lotta pressure to me.
So, what if we could just expect…… to floss, every day? And, clean out the kitty litter a little more often? And,stay on our diet by turning down dessert even when it is hot and chocolate and gooey? (Think of the night sweats, from way too much sugar, later on—it helps.)
What if we applauded ourselves for one more day of taking out the trash and making up the bed and kissing the kids. What if we patted ourselves on the back for a change—–just for being here.
Because…..here’s the truth.
If we are here on this earth and we are living and breathing—-we are miracles.
No, really. We are. Can you imagine creating a brain that runs a heart that runs the blood through all our organs and back? Every breath we take is a miracle. Every thought we have. Every word we say. We are miracles in motion.
We don’t “NEED a MIRACLE”. It is not something outside ourselves that we have to do in order to “HAVE A MIRACLE”.
Just, go look in the mirror.

Amen. If you haven’t heard Peter Mayer’s song, “HOLY NOW”. Go to petermayer.net and look it up…he says, everything is a miracle.
Thanks for this…as it is so true & I will keep reminding myself this when I get down….
This is exactly what I needed to read this Monday morning! My husband’s grandmother is having open heart surgery right now. She has been dreaming about her daughter, my husband’s mom, who passed away 3 years ago. She thinks she is not going to make it through this surgery. You just reminded me that every moment in life is a miracle. Thank you.
Thank you for this post. Love to you. xx
I think you missed the point Peggy. Evereything that you said is wonderful and true, but I don’t think we were given this Miracle of life just to exist. Sometimes one good deed can be someone elses miracle. Simple acts of kindness or pay it forward can be the thing that will also make you feel you make a difference
Wish I read this before just finishing the last bite of a slice of flourless chocolate cake with ganache, I’m already uptight about the sugar roller coaster!
