Forget New Year’s Resolutions….How About a Personal REVOLUTION?
On a scale of one to ten, a resolution seems kinda like a teeny weeny thing, doncha think? Let’s go for something much bigger this year. Think revolutionary. Think legendary.
Think of what people will say about you by the end of this new year—–”I remember when she used to cling to her hand-held can opener for support. Look at her now. She’s got her Google on, that’s for sure. Whodda thunk it? But, by George, she did it.”
For me, this kind of amazed commentary, would be a testament to my own personal REVOLUTION of embracing all things technical, of which, to date, I have had an extreme case of intimidation, irritation way beyond the excuse of PMS, and near fatal, frustration. So, I decided to take a nose dive into the old navel to see what is really lurking behind this over-reaction to what the rest of world seems to be responding to with an ease and fervor that only leaves me spitting and sputtering.
And, in the bigger scheme of things, it got me thinking about what it takes to CHANGE. Here’s what I have figured out—-maybe it will shed some light on the things you would like to do differently—-either more or less of—in the year ahead.
1. In order to CHANGE anything, I need to change my mind, first. What I think, IS the starting point for everything single thing, no matter what.
2. If I think it often enough, it turns into what I believe. And, there you have it. Stuck in the gerbel cage, on the wheel…..running the show. Sometimes just clacking away deep in the engine room of our psyche—-like the underground transit system of some major city.
3. Once I got that concept, I ask myself two KEY questions:
1. What is my deepest truth? In this case, the whole enchilada of technology, makes me feel stupid. I don’t get it the way everyone else does. My brain seems to work more slowly or differently and awkwardly, like trying to dance with my shoes on the wrong feet. I have always thought of myself as being at least fairly smart about most things—but then, I remember Algebra—-and I am back at the tutor, giving me THAT look and those eye-rolling exasperated sighs. My deepest truth takes me to an old, painful place. My inability to master Algebra will keep me from going to college. I will be left on the curb as the bus to the future and guaranteed success in life, pulls out of the depot. Stupid. Rejected. Left Out.
Big note to my current self: ANY THING, ANY PERSON that creates this much “charge” in my life is a definite throwback to some unresolved THOUGHT that has become a BELIEF that has become a FEAR, that just may be running the show. That’s the true part. Not the belief itself.
2. How can I re-frame THIS truth into my updated reality? First, just the journey inside to figure this out—makes me stop and take a breath—plunging into this kind of self-understanding takes desire and courage. I can pat myself on the back for that alone. Score ONE for self-esteem.
Then, I can review that old fear and see that none of the things I was afraid of then, actually became the truth. Somewhere, along the way, I found my seat on the bus—-and Algebra has never played a role in my life since. Thank God. Score ONE for the really big, “PHEW!”.
It never fails either. Once I get clear about what WAS vs. WHAT IS—something snaps into place…..in an instant. That kind of clarity melts away those crystalized patterns of thinking—-the wheel going round and round—-stupid, rejected, left out—-stops turning.
New, fresh, energy emerges. So, here’s the re-frame and REAL, CURRENT truth:
I may not find all the new gizmos and whirly gigs of technology simple to grasp, like others do, but I am smart enough to find the perfect person or people to show me the way. They will love feeling brilliant while teaching me all that I need to know in a supportive, collaborative atmosphere—-which will open me up to actually enjoy moving into the future of technology with ease (and dare I say, abandon and joy?).
So, there. Much better.
This works! Profound personal REVOLUTION is possible when that kind of shift happens. Is there something you desire deeply? Is there something that you feel STUCK about? Could this be a simple path to your own deepest truth? With this new clarity, could you re-frame some old, unproductive tape into NOW and what is actually, SO?
Some smart person said it—-and it seems like a great time, at the beginning of this new year, to repeat it.
The two best days of your life: the day you were born and the other one, when you figure out why.
